Gorls Gorls Gorls at BenCab Museum

Ja Amores’ Gorls Gorls Gorls is her first solo exhibition at the BenCab Museum.

“Go go go”
- Ruffa Mae Quinto

Growing up has never been simple. Today, it unfolds between inherited traditions and shifting ideas of adulthood, where memories of girlhood exist alongside online culture and imagined futures.

For her first solo exhibition, Gorls Gorls Gorls, Ja Amores turns to the messy, exhilarating, and sometimes contradictory space between girlhood and womanhood. It's a body of work shaped by her reflections on what it means to come of age in this in-between space.

The works are born from the artist's lived experiences. Throughout the exhibition, figures rendered in Amores' signature flowing, wind-swept forms appear suspended between becoming and letting go. They move with the uncertainty of girls still finding their footing, an emotional current that runs through each work.

Iiyak pero Pakak

There is something of Ruffa Mae Quinto's beloved Booba in Amores' journey. A Filipino pop culture icon, Booba never sets out with a grand plan. She simply "go, go, goes"—moving through one unexpected turn after another until she finds her place.

Like Booba, Amores did not follow a conventional path to her practice. As a self-taught artist, she built her career by continuing to make work rather than waiting for permission. Her practice gradually took her from Baguio to audiences in Metro Manila and illustration fairs across Southeast Asia.

Amores reflects on what it means to be a young woman artist stepping into an industry that is both exciting and uncertain. She considers girlhood rage, the weight of expectations, and the desire to exist beyond stereotypes. This body of work celebrates a generation of women finding their own rhythm in a world where identity is increasingly shaped by online culture. On canvas, her works show us that girlhood itself is movement rather than arrival.

Honest, playful, and deeply personal, Gorls Gorls Gorls celebrates women who move forward with curiosity, resilience, and just enough audacity to surprise even themselves.
